MAIN FIELD OF WORK

Päivi Kangas is an upper secondary school teacher of psychology, philosophy, ethics and religious education. Besides her work as a teacher she works part-time as a family and couple therapist. She has combined her interests in philosophical ethics and family therapy in her ongoing research concerning ethics in psychotherapy in the multidisciplinary doctoral program of psychotherapy at Jyväskylä University, Finland.

Ethics in Psychotherapy

How should we understand morality and how does it differ from ethics, how are these concepts different?  Moreover, what are professional ethics and ethical codes? Are they equivalent to laws and how do they match with one’s personal ethics and morality?

What does it mean, when we say that the psychotherapist’s profession is ethically especially sensitive and ethics should be in the very core of the therapeutic relationship?  Is it possible to offer ethical education to professionals and what should it be like?
