Abstract

Single session therapy (SST) is one way of organizing services in mental health field. It has been developed in in Anglo-Saxon countries such as Canada and Australia. The need for new ideas for mental health services has risen from scarcity of services, sparsely populated areas with long distances and queues for the services.

The central idea is to meet with the clients bearing in mind that this meeting might be the only time you meet these clients and could be enough for them. In SST the client, in collaboration with the professionals he / she meets, decides how much help is needed and when. It is important to listen to the clients, since often professionals estimate the need for help and meeting sequence higher than the client.

In the workshop a story of introducing and implementing single session ideas in a small mental health and family service unit is presented. The presenters introduce the phases of the project and reflect on things they have learned during this process and on their own variable roles in the project.

Eija-Liisa Rautiainen has worked as a supervisor for the team and is also a member of the research team, which aims at doing research concerning the implementation process. She works as a supervisor for one of the PhD thesis in the project.

Pertti Virta is the leader of the team in the unit and at the same time is doing his PhD thesis on this subject and in this way is also a member of the research team. Both authors see this project also as a developing process, in which the work in the unit is collaboratively developed with the team members.

Finally, presenters share some ideas about the future plans for the project and invite the participants into a dialogue about everything they have heard.
