Abstract

Are families who have a family member hospitalized getting the appropriate support? Illness of a family member, somatic or mental illness, affects everybody belonging to the family. The illness becomes a shared experience within the family. The illness can affect families’ emotional and physical health. Family perceived support questionnaire (ICE-FPSQ) is an instrument that measures cognitive and emotional support provided by health care professionals evaluated by the family of the patient.  It is founded in the Canadian Calgary Family Assessment and Intervention Models which is grounded on family therapy theoretical frameworks. It has been psychometrically tested both valid and reliable in international research. It has 14 items which are well grounded in theory and tested to use in health care institutions to measure how well health care professionals are supporting distressed and suffering families. Furthermore, it can be used to improve family oriented services and measure family services before and after implementation of family systems education for health care professionals.  The workshop will introduce how the items in the questionnaire where built on family theory research and psychometric testing. The workshop attendants will learn how to use the ICE-FPSQ questionnaire in different clinical services and calculate the outcome of the instrument. The instrument has been translated and psychometrically tested in Swedish, Portuguese and English. It has been used in health science research in Iceland, Sweden, Australia and Portugal.
