Abstract

At the Family care foundation we work in a collaborative and systemic way. We are striving towards democracy; all participants’ voices are equally important even if there is a difference in power and responsibility. We have a model for how we meet but within that form we individualize the therapeutic work together with every person and family that comes to us.  We are not using diagnostic words or specified manuals. Instead we honor the common language that we all can share.

In this workshop we will present an ongoing case with a father and his 12 year-old son who are living in one of our family homes. We will invite you to our different rooms that we always work in; the therapy room, the family home and the collaborative supervision that all meet together in the team room.  We choose to bring this particular story because we find it rare in the sense that it shows an opportunity for how to connect a parent and child after a long time of separation due to the child having been placed in care for several years.  The move back  home to a parent is a critical time and often overwhelmed with high expectations together with feelings of guilt, abandonment, sadness, happiness and a strong pressure from the social services and one selves to succeed.  The support needs to be compatible to this very demanding situation, a fact that is often overseen. In this work we have put ourselves in the position of witnesses and providers of support for this family.

We hope that this presentation can inspire others to invest more in these important processes.
