Abstract

Severely traumatized parents can benefit from psycho-education and skills-training in a stabilization group setting and improve their parenting skills. Trauma Centre Finland has published two group-intervention models, funded by the Finnish Slot Machine Association (RAY), for severely traumatized parents aimed at preventing intergenerational transmission of trauma.

Participants are offered a chance to attend parenting sessions, information evenings and LTP sessions during the course of treatment. Previously feelings of shame and experiencing parenting issues as too overwhelming might have hindered dealing with difficulties in parenting and seeking and getting help. With a new understanding of the impact severe trauma symptoms  (C-PTSD) have on their parenting, parents are enabled to work together on how best to interact with their children.

Parental Reflective Functioning (RF) is a measurable operationalization of parental metalization, the ability to infer mental states in the child and him/herself. It is seen as a critical component in supporting the development of affect regulation. Maternal RF has been found to predict infant attachment security, and has been hypothesized to mediate transmission of parental disorganized attachment pattern to the child. One of the goals of this project is to enhance RF capacity.
